For leaders making the toughest calls

Bring your hardest governance questions to a circle of stewards.

A deliberative panel of domain-expert stewards reasons through your hardest governance decisions, grounded in your bylaws, policies, and prior board minutes.

The Circle never learns from your questions. How we protect your data →

The Method

Governance deliberation, treated with the seriousness it deserves.

§ 01 · Convene

A circle of stewards, composed for your organization.

Each deliberation draws from a panel of domain stewards: Financial, Legal, Mission, Technology, Water, and more. You compose the Circle from your organization, your board's structure, and the steward archetypes most relevant to the questions your board faces, then bring your question to them.

§ 02 · Deliberate

Two phases, on the record.

Stewards speak in turn across two phases. Arguments are steelmanned, conflicts surfaced, and every claim is graded for verification: verified, incorrect, or unverified, so your board can see what's been checked and what hasn't.

§ 03 · Recommend

A recommendation you can bring to the board.

The Circle returns a written recommendation with executive summary, key arguments for and against, steward positions, action items, and a risk register. Advisory only, always verifiable.

§ 04 · Reconvene

Reconvene the Circle. Ask about the report.

When new information surfaces (a board met, a trustee resigned, a budget changed), reconvene the same Circle. The follow-up addendum names what changed, what the original missed, and what conditions remain unmet. Or ask about the report directly: every recommendation is open to follow-up questions for as long as the deliberation lives.

Every deliberation runs like a closed session: encrypted, confidential, and contractually walled off from any model training. Your process is protected so your outcomes can be transparent.

How the Circle Works

  1. Build your Circle.

Take our 3-question quiz. We recommend stewards based on 50 real boards.

  2. Bring your question.

A merger, a land acquisition, a compliance issue.

  3. Your stewards deliberate.

Each analyzes independently, then they debate and surface risks.

  4. Clear recommendation.

A structured report with arguments, dissenting views, and audit trail.

Grounded in Real Governance Data

We didn't build Steward Circle from theory. We studied how real nonprofit boards actually work, and every steward perspective is research-backed, not invented.

Beyond the 50 nonprofit boards above, our research extends to 31 corporate sustainability and ESG advisory bodies: 81 deliberative bodies total, with 800+ documented members across both segments.

The Governance Gap

Across 700+ board members, we found two data scientists. Zero cybersecurity professionals. Zero dedicated ethics officers. Your board is full of talented people, but there are entire disciplines they structurally can't recruit. That's where the Circle comes in.

Two Board Cultures

National boards optimize for fundraising capacity: Fortune 500 CEOs, investment bankers, Big Law partners. Regional boards optimize for mission knowledge: farmers, professors, park rangers, community organizers. Our stewards are calibrated to both.

The 7,300× governance gap.

Small Appalachian land trusts have one director per ~$140K of budget. Mega-foundations have one director per ~$1B. That 7,300× ratio is why governance pressure lands hardest on small mission-driven nonprofits, and why Steward Circle was built for them first.

What $297 Buys You

Every governance decision has a cost: your time, your consultants, your exposure. Here’s how the Circle compares.

A Fraction of the Fee

Before Consultants from $10,000+
Circle Full deliberation: $297

Traditional governance consultants start at $10,000 per engagement, if you can get them on the calendar. A full deliberation with up to 9 research-backed steward perspectives starts at $297. No retainer. No wait list.

Minutes, Not Months

Before Weeks of scheduling
Circle Expert analysis in minutes

Assembling board committee opinions means weeks of scheduling, conflicting availability, and follow-up emails that go nowhere. Your Circle deliberates immediately, delivered before your next meeting.

See the Blind Spots First

Before Missing angles you can't see
Circle 9+ expert perspectives + audit trail

Making a major decision without structured expert input means missing the angles your board doesn’t know to look for. 9+ steward perspectives (Finance, Legal, Ethics, Technology, and more) mean the risks get named before they become problems.

Not sure what you’re getting? Read a complete deliberation report: steward positions, debate transcript, executive summary, and all.
